Margaret is passionate about sharing knowledge to enhance social wellbeing within communities. She is a chartered accountant and registered company auditor with private and public sector expertise. As an experienced professional in assurance, governance and risk management, with expertise extending to all aspect of auditing (performance and financial) financial reporting and statutory obligations of public sector, profit and not-for-profit entities, Margaret has identified opportunities for improvement and been a catalyst for change in a number of organisations.
Margaret commenced her career with the big 4 chartered accounting firms and worked with PW (Fiji), EY (Parramatta and Melbourne) and KPMG (Melbourne) over a period of 9 years, after which she joined a smaller practice a partner designate for 2.5 years. Margaret joined the Victorian Auditor- Generals’ Office in 1992 and the Audit Office in 1999 progressing to Audit Principal and Director of Financial Audit. After 13 years, in 2005 she joined the Australian Auditing and Assurance Board as part of the senior management team to rewrite the force of law Australian auditing standards. Since 2008, Margaret has been the managing director of a small consulting practice specialising in audits, institutional strengthening and corporate governance.
Since 2005, Margaret has been an independent member of audit committees in the public sector. Currently, she is an independent member of four governance committees (of which she chairs two) and has two board appointments.
Margaret also has a keen interest in learning and education. Since 2008, she has had a number of engagements as a post-graduate subject coordinator of accounting, audit, governance and ethics related subjects at several universities including Deakin, La Trobe, RMIT and Swinburne. Between Feb 2019 to December 2020, she was a fractional Industry Fellow at Swinburne University.
Previously Margaret has delivered AUS-Aid training in island communities (Fiji, Samoa and Kiribati) to enhance local knowledge in financial accounting, auditing (financial, performance & compliance) and practice management.
